يوضح الكتاب إن هناك ما يسمى حب المعرفة ولكنه أيضا الحيرة المقلقة والتلمس الذي يعطي التفكير الفلسفي بعد الإثارة ولهذه الأسباب عينها يكون الحب فلسفة فالمحب يقتلع نفسه من نظرته الخاصة، لكي يوجه إلى نفسه وإلى العالم نظرة الآخر ويكابد محنة الشك بعد الحماس ويغذي التفكير بالشكوك وهذا التردد الجوهري يحرر المحب من الاعتداد ومن الحماقة، ففي الواقع إن الأحمق لا يعرف الحب واختلالاته وفي كتابه هذا يرينا بارت كم أن في الحب من دفء وضياء.
