تناول الكتاب حيث كانت الثكنات في مركز تدريب القوات الخاصة عبارة عن مبنى غير مميز مكون من ثلاثة طوابق يقع على الشاطئ في مدينة كورونادو بولاية كاليفورنيا، ويبعد عن مياه المحيط الهادي بمسافة لا تزيد على ٩٠ مترا. لم يكن هناك مكيف هواء في المبنى، وفي الليل، عندما تفتح النوافذ، كنت تسمع صوت المياه تزحف على الشاطئ عند المد وصوت الأمواج وهي ترتطم بالصخور. كانت الغرف في الثكنات منظمة للغاية. كانت غرف الضباط، حيث كنت أقطن مع ثلاثة من زملائي، تحتوي على أربعة أسرة، وخزانة لتعلق بها زيك الرسمي، ولا شيء آخر.
