تسلسل المؤلف في ترتيب الأنساب في كتابه، فاستهل كتابه بذكر نسب معد بن عدنان، ثم إبراهيم الخليل عليه السلام، وتدرج بالذكر في التنسيب وصولا إلى الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، ثم أولاد عبد المطلب والعباس، واهتم أيضا بذكر أنساب نساء الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم ومن يمتن له بصلة، بذلك فإن الكتاب يشمل بين صفحاته أخبارا ذات أهمية تاريخية منذ بدء البعثة النبوية وحتى تاريخ كتابة الكتاب في أيام العصر العباسي الأول وتشير موجودات الكتاب إلى حرص المؤلف على رصد أسباب وتواريخ الوفاة لكل علم مذكور في كتابه.
