تعتبر مدينة القدس من أقدم المدن التي عرفها التاريخ ومن المدن القليلة التي تجتمع فيها القدسية الدينية والأهمية التاريخية، ويشير التاريخ إلى أن أول من بنى المدينة هم اليبوسيون وهم من بطون العرب وكانوا ماهرين في البناء حيث أقاموا الأسوار والحصون، وكانت المدينة ذات أهمية من الناحية التجارية فقد كانت تقع على مفارق طرق التجارة المهمة. لهذه المدينة العريقة أسماء عديدة تعددت وفق للأمم التي غزتها أو سكنتها، وتختلف هذه المدينة عن سائر أرجاء المعمورة باستثناء مكة المكرمة والمدينة المنورة من حيث الفضائل التي تمتلكها، يكفيها أن تحمل أرضها حجارة بناء المسجد الأقصى وعمارته الفريدة ومكانته العريقة في أعماق العرب والمسلمين.
