جمع أبو حيان التوحيدي في هذا الكتاب من الحكم والطرائف والمواعظ واللغة ما يأسر الألباب وخاصة مقدماته لأجزاء البصائر والذخائر، فهو كتاب أدبي ممتع تجد فيه الأدب مختلطا بالفلسفة والحكمة والفوائد العلمية واللغوية المختلفة وجدير بالذكر أن هذا الكتاب ثمرة مطالعات التوحيدي ومشاهداته وسماعاته وقد ذكر في مطالع كتابه المصادر الرئيسية التي اعتمد عليها في تصنيفه هذا الأثر الضخم فهي تشتمل إلى جانب مؤلفات الجاحظ، على أمهات الكتب المعروفة مثل : النوادر لأبي عبد الله محمد بن زياد الاعرابي والكامل للمبرد وعيون الأخبار لأبن قتيبة ومجالسات ثعلب والمنظوم والمنثور لأبن أبي طاهر والأوراق للصولي والوزراء لأبن عبدوس والحيوانات لقدامة، هذا عدا القرآن والسنة ولا شك في أن التوحيدي أقدم على اختيار ما وتدوين ما دون بدافع من ذوقه وهواه ومزاجه وثقافته الدينية التقليدية ومذهبه الفلسفي في الاعتزال.
