تعلمت من ابن المقفع أن أفضل خصلة في أدغال السياسة هي السكوت، وأنفع الأشياء للمثقف السياسي أن يعرف قد منزلته من عقله، وأجدى الأمور للسياسي المثقف ألا يتكلم بما لا يعنيه، وأروح ما يريح الطامعين مثلي التسليم بالمقادير. وقرأت في \"كليلة ودمنة\" أن ملوك الأقاليم من الصين والهند وبلاد فارس والروم اجتمعوا في بعض الزمان واتفقوا أن يتكلم كل واحد منهم بكلمة تحفظ له غابر الدهر. فقال ملك الصين : أنا على ما لم أقل أقدر مني على رد ما قلت. وقال ملك الهند : عجبت لمن يتكلم بالكلمة، فإن كانت له لم تنفعه وإن كانت عليه أهلكته.
