الكتاب عبارة عن مسرحية تعد هذه المسرحية كوميديا كتبها جولد سميث وقدمت على المسرح فى لندن عام 1773 وتعد من أروع مسرحيات القرن الثامن عشر التي تحتفظ بجاذبية دائمة وما زالت تقدم على المسارح من وقت لآخر بطلها شاب أرستقراطى مثقف يدخل قصر وجيه قروى على أنه فندق فيبدو أنه يميل بقوة للتودد إلى نساء الطبقات الدنيا فى حين يبدو خجولا وعصبيا مع نساء الطبقة العليا التى ينتمى إليها وتكتشف كاتى ابنة صاحب القصر ذلك فترتدى ملابس بسيطة كعاملة فى الفندق حتى وقع فى حبها وتزوجها.
