ينقسم الكتاب إلي خمسة فصول يقدم الفصل الأول رؤية نظرية في نشأة هذا العلم من حيث المفهوم والمجال والنشأة أما الفصل الثاني فقد عالج فيه قضية مهمة في مجال علم الاجتماع الريفي وهي قضية الفروق الريفية الحضرية والنظريات المفسرة لها من مستخلصين تصورات نظرية مقترحة لتوضيح خصائص المجتمع الريفي، وتناول الفصل الثالث قضية التخلف في القرية المصرية موضحا بشكل أساسي عوامل تخلف القرية المصرية من منظور تاريخي تحليلي شامل بينما يعرج الفصل الرابع على موضوع مهم خاص بعملية التنمية المتكاملة مشيرا إلى نماذج محلية وعالمية أما الفصل الخامس فقد عالج بصورة شاملة موضوع القيم والتنمية الريفية.
