أرخ ابن العماد في كتابه هذا لألف سنة، مبتدئا بالسنة الأولى للهجرة، فالثانية وهكذا، مبينا في كل سنة أهم أحداثها، منبها إلى من توفي في هذه السنة من الأعلام والمحدثين منهم خاصة مع ذكر طرف من ترجمته، بحيث يكون ذلك تذكرة وعبرة لمتتبع الأحداث التاريخية وحافزا للقارئ بالسير في ركب العظماء وعونا للوقوف على حال رواة الأحاديث وقد خفف عن القارئ الرجوع إلى الكتب الكثيرة حيث اعتمد كتب الحافظ الذهبي ومن ثم المقدسي صاحب \"الكمال\" والأصفهاني صاحب \"الحيلة\" وابن خلكان صاحب\"الوفيات\" وغيرهم وقد خرج المحقق الأحداث من المراجع الأصيلة وخرج الأحاديث ونسب الأبيات إلى قائليها وزود الكتاب بمجلد للفهارس العلمية.
