يتناول الكتاب حيث كان ان على أينشتاين أن يختار موضوع النقاش والشخص المناسب الذى سوف يتبادل معه وجهات النظر فى هذه المناظرة. وقد اختار أينشتاين للنقاش مشكلة الحرب وأسبابها وكيفية الخلاص من تهديدها. واختيار موضوع النقاش سيسهل عملية اختيار الشخص المناسب كشريك لاينشتاين فى هذه المناظرة الثنائية، وكان من امنتظر أن يكون هذا الشخص مفكرا سياسيا أو شخصية دولية أو مختصا فى شئون الحروب أو العلاقات الدولية، إلا أن اختيار أينشتاين وقع على سيجموند فرويد (1856-1939) عالم النفس المشهور والذى انتهى قبل سنوات قليلة من دعوة أينشتاين من تأليف كتابه (الحضارة وإحباطاتها\" وهو الكتاب الذى شرح فيه نظريته حول الالتزام بين الغريزتين الأساسيتين لدى الإنسان: العريزة الجنسية، والغريزة العدوانية، غريزة البقاء، وغريزة الموت والتدمير.
