الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يقع ضمن سلسلة من كتب التراجم التي وصلت إلينا حيث دأب مفكرو تلك الحقبة الزمنية على تقييد تراجم علماء الأمة، ودرجت كتبهم على تقييد العلماء ورجالات المذهب وفق العصور/ الطبقات حيث فصلوا كل 50 سنة واعتبروها طبقة وأقدم هذه الكتب كتاب السيرة وأخبار الأئمة : لأبي زكريا يحي بن أبي بكر الوارجلاني) عاش في النصف الثاني من القرن الخامس الهجري (ثم يليه كتاب السـير : لأبي الربيع سليمان بن عبد السالم بن حسان الوسياني ثم يأتي كتاب العلامة محمد بن مقرين البغطوري سير مشائخ نفوسة، وأيضا كتاب طبقات المشائخ بالمغرب للدرجيني )أبو العباس أحمد، ت ق 7 هجري، ويليه كتاب الجواهر المنتقاة فيما أخل به كتاب الطبقات: لأبي القاسم محمد بن إبراهيم البادي المتوفى في القرن الثامن الهجري (14 ميلادي) ثم يأتي كتاب السـير : لأبي العباس بدر الدين أحمد بن أبي عثمان سعيد بن عبد الواحد الشماخي المتوفي سنة 928 هجري الذي ساعده تأخره الزمني على أن يستوعب كل ما استجمع في كتب من كان قبله واعتماده عليها.
