كوريا الجنوبية هي واحدة من دول العالم التي أجرت تغييرات سياسية وإجتماعية أعمق في فترة زمنية أقصر بدأت ما يسمى بالمملكة النائمة في عهد سلالة جوسون قبل قرن من التحديث ولكن البلاد فقدت السيادة الإقليمية مع الاحتلال الياباني 1910- 1945 تليها التقسيم والحرب الاهلية 1950- 1953 التي تركت البلاد مدمرة بالكامل ولكن في غضون بضعة عقود فقط تحولت كوريا الجنوبية من مجتمع زراعي فقير إلى أن أصبح منذ التسعينات مجتمعا ما بعد الصناعة مفتوحا لثورة تكنولوجيات المعلومات.
