نلحظ تزايدا لنفوذ الحركات السياسية الإسلامية في المشهد الإقليمي والدولي، بالإضافة إلى انتشار التنظيمات المتطرفة المسلحة التي تستبيح القتل باسم الدين الإسلامي، وتكتمل صورة التشظي والصراع حول (الشرعية الدينية) برجوع الطرق الصوفية إلى الفضاء العام، حيث تحاول هي، أو يدفع بها للانبعاث من جديد لتكون قوة دينية ذات دينامية اجتماعية وحضور سياسي داخل المجتمع المسلم. ولعل هذا التسابق بين العديد من التيارات الدينية لامتلاك المجال السياسي وإخضاعه لا يعكس فقط الحضور الطاغي للمعطى الديني (الإسلام) بصفته تعاليم وممارسة يومية ومحددا أساسيا للهوية في عصر العولمة، بل أيضا يظهر سعيا ذا مرجعية إيديولوجية لاحتكار التدين وتوظيفه سياسيا.
