الإشكال : أين تكمن هوية الشخص ؟ وما الذي يمنح للشخص ثباته ووحدته ؟ وما الذي يبقى ثابتا لديه بالرغم من التغيرات التي تحدث له ؟ 1- ديكارت : الفكر هو أساس هوية الشخص ووجوده ؛ فأنا أفكر إذن أنا موجود، أنا موجود مادمت أفكر وإذا انقطعت عن التفكير انقطعت عن الوجود. 2- جون لوك : الوعي المرافق دوما لأفعال الشخص وأفكاره هو ما يشكل هويته. وحينما يمتد هذا الوعي في الماضي يصبح ذاكرة. من هنا. فالوعي والذاكرة هما مكونان أساسيان لهوية الشخص. 3- شوبنهاور : لا تتمثل هوية الشخص في الوعي المرتبط بالذاكرة، لأن أحداث الماضي يعتريها النسيان، والذاكرة معرضة للتلف بسبب الشيخوخة أو المرض، بل يتمثل في الإرادة التي هي أساس هوية الشخص ونواة وجوده بحيث تظل ثابتة وفي هوية مع نفسها، وهي التي تمثل ذاتنا الحقيقية والمحركة لوعينا وذاتنا العارفة.
