إن معظم شعر الإمام الشافعي في الحكمة والنصح والإرشاد وهو يمتاز بالسهولة والإيجاز واختيار الكلمات السهلة والعبارات الواضحة مع حسن السبك ومتانة العبارة واللافت فيه أنه مقطوعات لا قصائد، فلم ينظم الشافعي قصائد طويلة ولعل ذلك يعود إلى عزوفه عن الشعر إلى الفقه وإلى أن غاية الشافعي منه النصح والإرشاد وهذان لا يناسبهما سوى المقطوعات الصغيرة وقد بلغ شعره مستوى من الجودة لا يبلغها مقل وشهد له الكثير من العلماء والنقاد اللغويين بطول باعه في الشعر حتى جعله المبرد من أشعر الناس.
