\"إني على يقين من أن من يقرأ هذا الكتاب لا يعود، بعد قراءته، إلى ما ورثناه من أفكار عن الحب وعن الغزل عند العرب. إنه يحدث، فعلا، قطيعة مع الفكر السائد في موضوعه. أعتقد أن لا أحد، قبل الطاهر لبيب، بذل الجهد وأصر عليه، بهذا القدر العالي من الموهبة والتحقيق معا، ليتذوق حكايات المحبين، وليفكك رموزها ويعيد بناءها، في الوعي الجماعي للقبائل ومخيالها... عرفنا، أخيرا، لماذا شعر البعض بالحاجة، تحت سماء الجزيرة العربية، إلى قول الحب، كما لم يقله أحد قبلهم، ولماذا عشقوه\". المستشرق الفرنسي أندريه ميكال عرف هذا الكتاب، عربيا في ثلاث ترجمات مختلفة، صدرت بين عامي 1981 و1994. وهذه الترجمة الرابعة هي من وضع المؤلف وتقديمه.
