يتناول هيلاري بتنام في هذا الكتاب بعض أهم المسائل الأساسية في الفلسفة، وهي: الصدق، المعرفة والعقلانية. وتمثل هدفه في تدمير المقولات الفكرية الثابتة التي تظهر، دائما، بأنها تجد الحلول المسموح بها لتلك المسائل وتقيدها. فكتاب هيلاري بتنام: العقل والصدق والتاريخ كتاب لافت، طموح، جيد الصياغة، يبحث في مجموعة واسعة من المسائل [الخاصة بالإبستمولوجيا (نظرية المعرفة)، الميتافيزيقا، نظرية القيم وفلسفة اللغة] وفي آراء مفكرين متنوعين (بدءا من أفلاطون، بيركلي وكنت إلى كارناب، كواين، كون، فتغنشتاين وفوكو...) وفضلا عن فوائده المذكورة، فإن الكتاب مهم لأنه محاولة جدية لوضع حد لقبضة العلوم الطبيعية على الفكر الفلسفي في هذا القرن. ومع أن بتنام لم يكن معاديا للعلوم، فإنه رفض معادلة الفكر العقلاني بالتفكير العلمي، والزعم بأن العلم يوفر الأوصاف والشروح الحقيقية للواقع.
