يتناول الكتاب التعريف باللغة ووظيفتها في المجتمع وأهمية دراستها وكذلك العوامل التي تؤثر في نمو هذه اللغة لدى الأطفال وكيفية تطورها وفي الفصل الثاني يبحث الكتاب في مراحل التطور اللغوي من مرحلة الاصوات غير اللغوية الى مرحلة الكلام الحقيقي وفهم اللغة ثم انتقل إلى مرحلة التطور اللغوي في مرحلة الطفولة الأولى ثم انتقل الى مرحلة الطفولة الثانية والأشتقاق للكلمات والأختراع اللغوي وانتقل البحث إلي بعض الظواهر اللغوية والقصور والتأخر والاضطراب في نمو اللغة اللفظية وفي الختام اضطرابات الكلام الناجمة عن ضعف في القدرة العقلية لدى الطفل.
