لا يكتب عن بغداد إلا من يعرفها، ولا يعرفها تمام المعرفة ويقدرها حق قدرها إلا بنوها وساكنوها الذين كانت مساقط رؤوسهم فوق ترابها، والحقيقة أن ليس من مدينة أو موقع أو محلة إلا ولها حاضر معهود مشهود يعيشه الأحياء ماض مكتوب في سجلات التاريخ ومروي الناس ولها أيضا المعاصرون وحارات بغداد ومحلاتها القديمة اندثر بعضها أو تهدم أو زال من الوجود بسبب العمران والتشييد أو بسبب ما أصابها من تخريب أو دمار لذلك غاب عن تلك المواقع أهلها الأصليون الذين تداولوا السكن في بيوت المحلة من آباء وأجداد وقد سعى المؤلف في هذا الكتاب إلى تجميع وجرد وتبويب وتنظيم وتحقيق كل ما وصل إليه من أخبار ومدونات وصور ووثائق وخرائط وروايات ورسائل وأحاديث وذكريات وقام بتدوينه بدقة في هذا الكتاب وأصل ما ورد في الكتاب مجموعة محاضرات ألقيت في منتدى بغداد التابع إلى أمانة بغداد.
