يعد النصف الثاني من القرن 19 مهدا تنويريا قلب الاهتمام من المادة الجامدة والحيوية إلى المادة السلوكية والبشرية، المتجلية في التفاعل الإنساني اجتماعيا ومع عاداته وتقاليده وفق ذهنية معدة سلفا من تخمين الآباء والأجداد، الأمر الذي تدفقت من خلاله الكثير من العلوم الإنسانية والاجتماعية ومنها علم الإنسان. هذا العلم الذي يطلق عليه أيضا لأناسه أو الأنثروبولوجيا، فكلها تسميات تشير إلى ذلك التخصص العلمي الذي من شأنه دراسة النظم الفيزيقية والاجتماعية والثقافية للمجتمعات التقليدية المشكلة لوحدة مركبة ومعقدة، إلا أن السيرورة العلمية لهذا التخصص كانت تضج بالنقاشات وبالإزاحات أو الإضافات، لأجل تأصيل استقلاليته ومكانته المتمايزة عن غيره من العلوم الأخرى.
