يتناول الكتاب الحياة السياسية والاقتصادية والثقافية والاجتماعية في عهد السلطان برغش بن سعيد (1870-1888 ميلادي) سلطان زنجبار وذلك لعدة أسباب وهي : توضيح الدور الذي لعبه السلطان برغش بن سعيد في تاريخ شرق إفريقيا الحديث والجهود التي بذلها في سبيل تطوير زمجباو وعدم توافر دراسات حول السلطان برغش بن سعيد وقلة المصادر والمراجع العربية التي تتحدث عن سيرته وأعماله طوال فترة حكمه بالإضافة لتزامن عهد السلطان برغش بن سعيد مع فترة حرجة تمثلت في الزحف الاستعماري وتسابق الدول الأوروبية لتقسيم أفريقيا في معاهدات برلين(1884-1885 ميلادي) وأخيرا إبراز المؤثرات الحضارية للوجود العماني في إفريقيا الشرقية.
