تناول الكتاب إن من أشهر كتب أفلاطون، التي جمع فيها معظم أفكاره، كتاب \"الجمهورية\"، الجمهورية في كتابه هذا هي مدينة فاضلة مثالية، يقسم أفلاطون فيها المجتمع إلى ثلاث طبقات، طبقة الفلاحين والصناع، وحسبهم أن يتعلموا مهنة من المهن فقط، وطبقة المحاربين، وثقافتهم واجبة، وتشمل الموسيقى والرياضة، وطبقة الحكام وثقافتهم فلسفية عالية، إذ يدرسون جميع العلوم ومنها الميتافيزيقا، ويرى أفلاطون أن رؤساء الدولة يجب أن يكونوا علماء وفلاسفة لا كهنة ورجال دين، أما الفن والفنانون فقد قدرهم أفلاطون في جمهوريته كثيرا، فقد رأى أن يبتعد الشعراء عن الجمهورية وأن يقيموا خارجها بكل إجلال وإكبار واحترام، لأن أعمالهم الفنية المعبرة عن العادات الإنسانية الشريفة هي التي تدعو الناس إلى احترامهم وإجلالهم، وراجع أفلاطون صورة جمهوريته الفاضلة في كتابه \"القوانين\"، إذ جاءت القوانين تعديلا وتنقيحا للجمهورية.
