يتناول الكتاب جذور الاضطراب في الفكر الغربي بخصوص الإسلام عبر مقاربة أفكار ثمانية فلاسفة ألمان ويقول المؤلف إيان\"إن هذا الكتاب ليس للدفاع عن الإسلام بل هو محاولة لتشريح وفحص ذلك الاضطراب كما أنه لا يقدم أي حلول خلاصية لمعالجة تعقيدات وتبعات الصورة الإشكالية التي تمثل بها الإسلام ثقافة وشعوبا في مؤلفات هولاء الفلاسفة ويعرض المؤلف خليطا متنافرا من الأفكار والمواقف والانطباعات التي يخرج بعضها من الأرشيف الألماني لأول مرة ولنجد في النهاية صعوبة وجود نسق واضح محدد لنظرة أولئك الفلاسفة للإسلام والشعوب المسلمة حتى ضمن أفكار الفليسوف الواحد.
