في هذا الكتاب تناول التعريف ببعض المخترعين وطريقة حلهم للمشكلات ونجاحهم في تحقيق متطلباتهم، حيث ناقش الكتاب أن بداية الاختراع تبدأ عادة بفكرة تخطر على بال أحد المتحمسين وأن الأمر لا يتوقف عند هذه الفكرة فحسب، بل كثيرا ما يأتي من يدخل على هذه الفكرة من التحسينات ما يجعلها أكثر فائدة وسرد بعض الأمثلة لبعض الاختراعات مثل : اختراع أول دولاب خشبي أدى فيما بعد إلى اختراع القطار الانسيابي المعروف اليوم، كما أن النول اليدوي القديم تطور إلى إبداع الآلات الضخمة التي تنسج مئات الأمتار من النسيج في الدقيقة ولولا سلسلة التحسينات على صناعة العدسات فلن نحصل على التلسكوب الذي نكتشف به معالم الكون. وغيرها من الأمثلة التي غيرت مجرى العالم الحديث.
