يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى تناول قضية العلمانية وموقعها في الفكر السياسي المصري في النصف الأول من القرن العشرين والتعرف على موقف التيارات الفكرية والسياسية والاجتماعية المختلفة من هذه القضية، خاصة أن هذه الفترة ذات المدى الزمني الكبير من 1900-1950 قد وسعت وعلى مدى خمسين عاما جرت فيها تحولات واسعة في المجتمع المصري على أيدي الاحتلال الإنجليزي وبفعل تواجده العسكري والسياسي، والمحاولة الخطيرة من قبله لفرض وإدخال تغييرات جذرية في البنيان الاقتصادي والسياسي وأحداث تطور رأسمالي يخدم ويتبع وينسجم مع طموحاته الإمبريالية.
