يتناول الكتاب حيث يعالج المؤلف سؤال الحرية في الوجود الإنساني، الشخصي والاجتماعي، مستكملا أبحاثه السابقة الأصيلة، بدءا بكتابه الشهير عن ابن خلدون. إن الأفق الذي يرتبط به تفكير المؤلف أفق إنساني كوني، محدد باهتمامه كفيلسوف له طريقته الخاصة في معالجة القضايا الإنسانية، ومشروط بانفتاحه على العولمة، ولكنه يظهر كأفق كوني من موقع ثقافي تاريخي معيّن، هو موقع الشعوب العربية الباحثة عن طريق للخروج من أزماتها المتعاقبة منذ ما يقرب من نصف قرن... وهذه الطريق شاقة وطويلة، متعددة المسالك والمستويات، لكنها تنطلق، في رأي المؤلف، من باب رئيسي واحد، هو باب الحرية.
