تحتحوز علوم السلوك الإنساني والتطور الثقافي والحضاري جانبا كبيرا من اهتمام المفكرين وعلماء الاجتماع، وفي هذا الكتاب يطرح \"غوستاف لوبون\" رؤيته للأبعاد النفسية لتطور المجتمعات. ويوضح المؤلف عبر دراسة متأنية أن لكل عرق سمات نفسية ثابتة ثبات الصفات البيولوجية، حيث يرث الأفراد المزاج النفسي لأسلافهم، ويظهر أثر تلك المزاجات جليا في التكوين الحضاري للأمة ككل، فاعتمال الأفكار والمبادئ والمعتقدات المتوارثة في الوجدان الجمعي لأمة ما، يفرز أنماطا مختلفة من النظم والفنون التي تطبع بدورها المظهر الحضاري الخارجي لتلك الأمة بروح خاصة تميزها عن غيرها، وتزداد متانة تلك الروح عبر الزمن، حتى تبلغ درجة عالية من العمق والتعقيد، فيتعذر تناقلها بين أمة وأخرى، وكذا يكون من الصعوبة بمكان فصمها أو تغييرها تغييرا جذريا، فيما يكون انحلال روح الأمة نذيرا بانحطاطها وتدهورها.
