لا توجد مدينة في العالم تحتفظ بثلاث بوابات من بواباتها يزيد عمرها عن تسعمائة وستة وعشرون عاماً غير مدينة القاهرة، وهي باب النصر وباب الفتوح وباب زويلة وهذه الأبواب ظلت مفتوحة ولا يخشى من عدو يقتحم المدينة من خلالها طوال هذه المدة ماعدا فترة قصيرة سنة 562 هـ / 1167 م كانت بحوزة فرسان عموري الأول الصليبي لتحصيل قيمة جزية قدرها مائة ألف دينار فرضت على الدولة الفاطمية في تلك السنة، وأغلق باب زويلة لمدة شهر أثناء سلطنة المؤيد شيخ المحمودي بدأ يوم 28 ربيع الآخر 821 هـ / 4 يونيه 1418 م وانتهى يوم 26 جمادى الأولى 821 هـ / أول يوليو 1418 م بسبب قهري هو إعادة بناء المئذنة الغربية لجامع المؤيد شيخ المبنية فوق البرج الغربي لباب زويلة لميلها والخوف من سقوطها.
