جاءت السيدة الثرية مريلو عند شيرلوك هولمز لتعرض قضية أثارت فضولها واستغرابها. إذ كان لديها نزيلة تضع وشاحا تغطي به وجهها ولا ترفعه أبدا وكانت تصرخ بالليل من الهلع الوحش .. الوحش. وقد صدف أن رأت السيدة مريلو وجهها بدون وشاح فهالها ما رأته من تشويه مفجع الذي كان يوما ما جميلا. ومما يثير الشكوك أن هذه النزيلة كانت متزوجة ولها صديق ترافقه وفجأة حدثت أشياء غريبة في وقت واحد. إذ مات زوجها واختفى صاحبها ووضعت وشاحا ليغطي وجهها. وتحولت شخصيتها إلى العزلة وضعفت صحتها وازداد خوفها وهلعها خاصة بالليل.
