يعد الماء في العديد من الديانات مادة طاهرة ويتم الأغتسال بالماء للتطهر وللتحلل من الذنوب ففي الإسلام يحظى الماء بمكانة كبيرة إذ ورد في القرآن أن الماء أساس الحياة حيث ذكر تحت أسم (الماء) في 17 آية كما ذكر بأسم (مياه) في 34 آية كما أن الماء يستعمل للتطهر والوضوء في كل صلاة ولغسل الأموات قبل الدفن وكذلك في الديانة اليهودية يستعمل الماء للتطهر والأغتسال وفي الديانة المسيحية يستعمل الماء للتعميد.
