تعد وظيفتا تخطيط الإنتاج ومراقبته من أهم وظائف إدارة الإنتاج والعمليات في أية منظمة لا بل فهما يمثلان محور وظائف هذه الإدارة فبعد وضع القرارات الإستراتيجية للنشاط الإنتاجي مثل اختيار الموقع والترتيب الداخلي له وتخطيط الطاقة (خطة طويلة المدى) وغيرها ويبدأ قسم أو إدارة تخطيط ومراقبة الإنتاج بوضع خطة مزج وتحويل عناصر ومدخلات العملية الإنتاجية إلى مخرجات على شكل سلع أو خدمات، تكون موجهة لإشباع حاجات ومتطلبات المستهلك آخذة بالحسبان خطة التسويق والمبيعات موارد وإمكانات المنظمة والقيود المفروضة عليها ساعية إلى استخدام واستغلال أمثل لهذه الموارد وتحقيق أفضل عائد ممكن.
