رافقت السموم البشرية منذ فجر التاريخ، وكانت دائما عبئا ثقيلا على كاهل الطبيب، ولكن مشاكلها اليوم صارت أكثر عما عليه اليوم. وانتشارا ؛ لأن البيئة كانت في السابق نظيفة، كما أن السموم كانت أقل عددا تعقيدا فقد كثرت أنواع السموم المحيطة بنا في الهواء الذي نستنشق، والماء الذي نشرب، والطعام الذي نأكل، والدواء الذي نتناول، ومعنا في المنزل والسيارة ومكان العمل.
