بخصوص عقد البيع الدولي للبضائع نجد اتفاقية فيينا من أهم الأعمال على الإطلاق الهادفة إلى توحيد قواعد القانون الدولي بخصوص هذا النوع من العقود المنجزة من قبل لجنة القانون التجاري الدولي التابعة لمنظمة الأمم المتحدة والتي شرع فيها منذ سنة 1968 خلال دورتها الأولى التي أسفرت عام 1972 عن وضع اتفاقيتين الأولى تخص تكوين العقد والثانية تخص آثاره غير أنه لم يكتب لهما النجاح بسبب العدد الضئيل من الدول التي صادقت عليهما بحجة أن غالبية الدول خاصة النامية وبالخصوص الدول الأشتراكية منها لم تشارك في أعمالهما التحضيرية التي طغت عليها النزعة الأوروبية.
