ينقسم الكتابه على ثلاثة فصول خصصت الفصل الأول لدراسة الجهود الدلالية تأريخيا عند اليونان والهنود واللغويين العرب القدامى والفقهاء والمفسرين والبلاغيين والنقاد وعلماء الغرب المحدثين أما الفصل الثاني فضم الحديث عن عناصر تحديد الدلالة ومظاهر تغير الدلالة وعوامل التطور الدلالي إضافة إلى توضيح فكرة الدلالة المركزية والدلالة الهامشية وتضمن الفصل الثالث آراء اللغويين المحدثين في تعريف (المعنى) وعلاقة اللغة بالفكر وخصص بحثا شافيا عن السياق وأنواعه ونظرية الحقول الدلالية وختم الفصل بالحديث عن العلاقات الدلالية كالترادف والأضداد والمشترك اللفظي.
