يتحدث الكتاب عن أنه لم يكد يمضي على عودة مدينة القدس إلى أحضان المسلمين خمسة وثلاثون عاما حتى كانت عرضة للمساومة والتفريط من قبل السلطان الكامل بن العادل الأيوبي سلطان مصر، في واحدة من أعجب التنازلات التي يقدم عليها حاكم مسلم حين تشتد به الأزمة، فيقدم على عمل طائش، بعيدا عن الحكمة والسداد، ويفرط في المقدسات التي لا يملك التصرف في أمرها شيئا. هذا ما أقدم عليه السلطان الأيوبي قبل أن تسقط دمياط في يد الصليبيين في (27 من شعبان 616 هـ / 5 نوفمبر 1219 م) في حملتهم الصليبية الخامسة على مصر، فعرض عليهم بعد أن يئس من قدرة دمياط على الصمود-استعداده لإعادة بيت المقدس إليهم مقابل الجلاء عن مصر.
