يحتوي هذا الكتاب وفرة من الحكايات الشعبية الحجازية جمعها الكاتب من أفواه الرواة و\"الحكاءات\" مباشرة. وعلى الرغم من أن الحكايات الشعبية قد تتماثل من حيث موضوعاتها وسردياتها، إلا أن كل منطقة تضفي عليها نكهة تخصها دون غيرها، وهو ما فعلته الحجاز أيضا. إن عادة الحكي في الحجاز حميمة جدا، إذ تكون الحكاية خاصة بالأبناء وليست عامة، ومن تقوم بالسرد هي أم أو جدة تحكي لأبنائها أو أحفادها، وتتم الحكاية قبل النوم، ولهذا شاع تعبير حكاية قبل النوم، وهي حكايات تدور في محيط الواقع مخففة من عوالم الجن والسحرة.
