تناول الكتاب حيث تشكلت أنواع أدبية مختلفة تدور حول ثيمة (موضوعة) البحث وأشكاله المختلفة. وقد يكون جورج لوكاش من أوائل النقاد الذي رفع هذه الميزة إلى معيار للرواية الحديثة. في سياق الإرث الأدبي الفلسطيني هناك عدة نماذج روائية تتخذ من مجاز البحث عامودها الفقري الأساسي، ومن ثم تقوم بتحويرات وبتظليلات متنوعة عليه، في سعيها للإمساك بقرون البحث المتعدّدة والمتشابكة بغية حلها أدبيا وجماليا. قد يكون من أبرز النماذج الفلسطينية لهذا النوع من التشكيل الأدبي هو الجسد الروائي الذي أنتجه جبرا إبراهيم جبرا (أنظر مثلا السفينة والبحث عن وليد مسعود)، وذلك الذي أنتجه غسان كنفاني (أنظر مثلا رجال في الشمس وعائد إلى حيفا). ورغم الاختلاف في الأسلوب والمرجعيات وما إلى ذلك، إلا أن التشكيل الأساسي الذي يقف عليه النص الأدبي لكل منهما هو عملية الخروج من والسّعي إلى مكان / زمان آخر، يتحلى أحيانا بملامح شبه محددة وأحيانا أخرى تكون ملامحه مجهولة تماما.
