يلخص الكتاب قلة عدد القصائد التي قيلت في البتراء مقارنة بأهمية المدينة وقيمتها الحضارية. لم يرق مستوى الشعر الذي قيل في البتراء، غاليا، إلى مكانة هذه المدينة الخالدة. معظم القصائد التي قيلت في البتراء غلب عليها النظم والوصف التسجيلي. غالبية القصائد جاءت بعد فوز المدينة بكونها إحدى عجائب الدنيا السبع. مشاركة عدد من الشعراء العرب في الشعر الذي قيل في البتراء إلى جانب الشعراء الأردنيين ،ويتناول العديد من العناوين المهمة كمقام الطلل وهو قناع فني يتوسل الشاعر من خلاله لتأمل المكان والتعبير عن أثره في النفس. إضافة إلى رثاء الممالك الزائلة والتي تصور أفول مملكة سادت ثم زالت ولم يبق من إطلالها الماثلة للعيان إلا ما تثيره في النفس من أحزان وأشجان.
