بدأ المؤلف كتابه ببيان فضل الخيل المتخذة في سبيل الله، ثم بيان التماس نسلها ونمائها، والنهي عن قطعها، ثم بين ما جاء في الأمر بارتباطها، وما يستحب من ألوانها وشياتها، وأوضح ما جاء في كراهة شؤمها وشكلها، وما يحل ويحرم من سباقها، وأتبع ذلك ببيان ما يقسم لصاحبها من الغنائم والسهام. ثم ختم الكتاب بما جاء في سقوط الزكاة في الخيل، فجاء الكتاب كاملا تاما في أبوابه وفصوله.
