ينفسم هذا الكتاب إلي ستة فصول تناول الفصل الأول يؤرخ للمدة الزمنية التي دخلت فيها قبائل يافع تحت سلطة آل القاسم والفصل الثاني يستعرض تاريخ أسرة آل عفيف والمكانة التي كانت تتمتع بها في مجتمعها والفصل الثالث يستعرض علاقة الصراع الطويلة بين السلطنة العفيفية وتناول الفصل الرابع موضوعين رئيسين الأول علاقة السلطنة العفيفية بالكيانات والسلطنات المجاورة لها والثاني علاقتها بالبريطانيين بعد سيطرتهم على عدن وركز الفصل الخامس على طبيعة نظام السلطنة ومصادر مواردها وأقسامها الإدارية ويؤرخ الفصل السادس للانتفاضة التي قام بها السلطان محمد عيدروس في نهاية عهد السلطنة.
