تعتبرالسياسات النقدية من أهم السياسات الاقتصادية نظرا للدور الذي تلعبه في تحقيق أهداف المجتمع جنبا إلى جنب مع السياسات الأخرى، وتأتي أهميتها من تأثيرها الكبير على النظام الاقتصادي، فأي اختلال في أداء النظام النقدي يلقي بظلاله على أداء النظام الاقتصادي لوظائفه من حيث معدلات النمو ومستوى الإنتاج والتشغيل وتوزيع الثروة والدخل الحقيقي. وسنتناول في هذا الكتاب الإسهامات النظرية التي تناولت دور وأهمية السياسة النقدية في تحقيق الاستقرار والتنمية الاقتصادية، كما سنتناول كنموذج بالبحث والتحليل السياسة النقدية المنفذة في الجمهورية اليمنية خلال الفترة (1990- 2004)، للتعرف على دور هذه السياسة ومدى فعاليتها في تحقيق الاستقرار الاقتصادي والتنمية الاقتصادية، خصوصا وأن اليمن تصنف ضمن أقل البلدان النامية نموا، وتمثل التنمية الاقتصادية فيها أهمية بالغة سواء في برامج الحكومة الإصلاحية أو خططها الخمسية، من أجل الدفع بعملية النمو نحو الأمام.
