يعالج هذا الكتاب التطورات المختلفة التي طرأت على الحركة العلمية في بيت المقدس في ظل التطورات السياسية المتغيرة منذ الفتح الإسلامي وحتى أواخر العصر الملوكي وتغطي موضوعات الدراسات هذة الفترة الزمنية. يتناول البحث تطورات الحركة الثقافية والنشاطات العلمية في بيت المقدس في المرحلة الأولى حتى سقوط المدينة تحت السيطرة الفرنجية. ثم يتناول موضوع هجرة العلماء من بيت المقدس على أثر استيلاء الفرنجة على المدينة، وأثرها الهام في المجال الثقافي. كما يبحث الكتاب في الحركة العلمية في بيت المقدس حتى بعد تحرير المدينة من أيدي الفرنجة وحتى أواخر العصر المملوكي.
