يتهم العلمانيون الدين كونه حاضنا قويا لأساطير، بسبب ما حشر بالدين من قبل بعض المراجع الدينية من أساطير وهي ليست من أصل الدين أو موضوعة، أو وجود أساطير تسللت ودخلت الإسلام بحكم الصراع على السلطة، ومن الخطأ أن نحكم على الدين بما هو خارج عنه أو ليس عنه، إن الخوف هو أحد أسباب إضفاء صبغة أسطورية للدين، وعندما يطرح سؤال الخوف من ماذا ؟ يكون الجواب : الخوف من الإتهام بالردة، وحكم السدنة المسبق على من يخرج عن طوع أمرهم ويؤسس ذاته وعقليته بمعزل عنهم وعن خرافاتهم المتناقضة.
