إن نتاج البحث والتأليف يمثل عصارة الفكر الإنساني ومظهرا من مظاهر حضارة الأمة أبدعته قرائح العلماء وعقول المفكرين لذلك كان من الضروري تقديم نبذة عن طريقة البحث وأسلوبه ليكون السالك على خبر به يأخذ منه بطرف ويساعده على الإنشاء وتتبع المعلومة في أوعية المعلومات المختلفة يغني بها بحثه وتصنيفه، ويحسن بعد ذلك عرضه وتوصيفه، وبيانه وترصيفه وذلك أن الهدف الرئيسي لهذا الكتاب هو تقديم ثقافة البحث العلمي للشداة كما يهدف الكتاب إلى إعداد شخصية المقبل على التحصيل إعدادا يكمل علمه بطريقة البحث الذاتي ويساعده على التعلم المستمر واستعمال التقانات المعاصرة فالباحث ضالته الحقيقة وأينما وجدها التقطها وحيثما التقطها أعلنها.
