يرى ميرسيا إلياد أن الإنسان الحالي الدنيوي يحاول، وهو المستغرق في التاريخ المدني، أن يدفن الرجل الديني الموجود على عتبات لاوعيه، والمشرب بالرموز والنماذج الأصلية. ورغم تعاطفه مع الرجل المتدين، فإنه يرى إلى أن الدنيوي يعيش الأزمات الوجودية ذاتها، إلا أن الدين يقدم حلولا لا يمتلكها الدنيوي، وليس معنى هذا أن إلياد يطالب بالتحرر من التقنيات الحديثة وإفرازاتها، أو التخلص من الموروث الإنساني الضخم الذي راكمته هذه التقنيات، إنما السعي إلى إيجاد علائق جديدة تخرجه من حالة السبات الروحي التي يغرق فيها.
