تتناول الدراسة جانبين متلازمين في الأهمية هما : دراسة الشواهد في \"الأساس\" بشكل عام مع ما يتصل بها من الإحصاء، والتصنيف، والوقوف على أبرز المصادر التي اعتمد عليها المؤلف في وضع معجمه. ونزعة الزمخشري إلى توظيف الشاهد اللغوي وتحديد الدلالات، والمستويات، مع عناية فائقة بالكلام المجازي وتحديدا الشواهد المجازية فإن للزمخشري تصوره الخاص عن المجاز واستعمالاته هذا التصور هو الذي دفعه إلى التركيز على الشاهد اللغوي بغض النظر عن زمانه أو قائله، لذلك نجد أن الزمخشري لا يحتفل كثيرا بقضية عصور الاحتجاج.
