\"المحبر\" واحد من أهم الكتب التي تناولت أنساب العرب، حيث تناول أبو جعفر ابن حبيب العلامة الأخياري النسابة، الأنساب التي كان لأصحابها دورا من الأدوار ابتداء من مولد النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، ومن ثم في مراحل البعثة والدعوة والغزوات والأحداث البارزة في تلك الفترة التاريخية من الإسلام. على أنه لم يخل تاريخ الأنساب هذا من أنساب كان لها وزنها في تاريخ العرب قبل البعثة في تاريخ العرب. وقد صدر المصنف مؤلفه هذا بذكر المدد بين الأنبياء عليهم الصلاة والسلام، وذكر لتاريخ العرب لينتقل بعد ذلك إلى مولد النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، ولسرد أنساب من كان لهم صلت به صلى الله عليه وسلم في مجالات متفرقة من هذه الفترة.
