يوضح الكاتب الكبير أحمد بهجت ماهية هذا الكتاب كالتالي : في بحار التصوف ألف سؤال وسؤال، وألف غريق وغريق، وألف لؤلؤة ولؤلؤة، وألف محارة فارغة ومحارة مليئة بطين القاع .. وثمة حكايات لها العجب مثل حكايات الأساطير في ألف ليلة وليلة، وبدلا من قصص الجن وعجائبه سنجد قصص الأولياء وكراماتهم، وهي أيضًا عجائب وهناك إحتمال كبير أن نغرق في هذا البحر لو لم نكن نجيد السباحة أو نستخدم أدوات الملاحة الصحيحة.
