وصف فوكو فلسفته بطريقة منهجية اصطلح عليها بالأركيولوجيا، ومرة أخرى تراه يجمع بينها وبين الجنيالوجيا (وصفي أركيولوجي + تاريخي جنيالوجي)، وما طرحه فوكو حول أركيولوجيا المعرفة يناهض إمكانية فكرة إقامة التأويل، حيث لا تبحث الأركيولوجيا في باطن الخطاب ولا خلف اللغة، حيث تصف الأركيولوجيا الأشياء التي قيلت من حيث هي كذلك، وهذا يعني أنها تحليل وصفي وتاريخي في الوقت نفسه، وبالتالي فالجنيالوجيا عنده حاولت حل مشكلة المعنى التي عجزت عنه الأركيولوجيا، وكذلك عجزها عن مناقشة السلطة وتحليلها بجميع أشكالها، والجنيالوجيا تعني من جهة معرفة الأصول، ومن جهة أخرى معرفة معنى وقيمة الجماعات والعائلات، الجنيالوجيا عنده هي عكس التأويل، تهتم بالظاهر، ومن هنا فإن المؤلفة سارة ميلز تعد مصطلحي \"أركيولوجيا\" و\"جنيالوجيا\" الأكثر ارتباطا بالتحليل على نهج فوكو.
