فن \"المؤتلف والمختلف\" من الفنون التي اعتنى بها أهل السنة لضبط الأسماء وتصحيحها، حيث إن الأسماء والأعلام يختلف نطقها مع توحد رسم الأقلام، قال ابن الصلاح: (هذا فن جميل، من لم يعرفه من المحدثين كثر عثاره، ولم يعدم مخجلا، وهو منتشر لا ضابط في أكثره يفزع إليه، وإنما يضبط بالحفظ تفصيلا)، وقال العراقي في ألفيته: واعن بما صورته مؤتلف *** خطا ولكن لفظه مختلف وقال علي بن المديني: (أشد التصحيف؛ التصحيف في الأسماء). ومن هذا النوع كان كتاب صاحبنا الخطيب البغدادي حيث ألف عبد الغني بن سعيد الأزدي (409 هـ) كتابين؛ أحدهما في \"مشتبه الأسماء\"، والثاني في \"مشتبه النسبة\".
